Community Privacy Options
After launching your community, you will have the opportunity to choose between three privacy options for your community:
All three privacy options have different benefits and applications, so it is important to carefully consider which privacy option you choose.
Should my community be open, closed or private?
At launch, every community is open community by default. Here’s the difference and tips to help you choose the right settings for you:
- An open community is open to anyone who wants to join. If you are looking to have as many members as possible, and don’t have particular criteria members need to join, then an open community would be the best choice.
- A closed community requires an invitation or approval by the community administrator for membership. While anyone who comes to the site can see content, membership is required to post, comment, connect, or share. This gives you control over membership and makes it easier to focus the makeup of your membership. For example, if your community is for students of a particular university, this is the best option for you.
- A private community is private to any visitor. Only approved community members can view and take part in its content and posts. A private community requires an invitation or approval by the community administrator for membership.
